Is that how we're supposed to think?

by DominicGee @ 2008-03-13 - 16:55:00

Somebody at work told me the other day
"taking drugs is wrong because it is illegal"
which sort of stumped me. Where to start on such terrible logic? If she'd said "drugs are illegal because they are wrong" I would have understood a bit better, but the government's track record at making moral claims is crap to say the least. Not that I'm advocating the legalisation of drugs, that's not the issue. The issue is that someone will take their moral initiative from the government of all people. It reminds me of a great Peep Show quote from Jeremy:
"It's not wrong Mark, it's just illegal - like drink-driving."

You're confusing the law with government. The law is what we base the make-up of society in the UK on, the government simply oversees it. The law has a claim to moral good because that's how we drew it up in the first place, but the government doesn't.

I agree with you, however, popular, or as it is known in this country Common Law is not a la mode anymore. Statute Law is where the power is, and it is how this government exercises it's power over people. Maybe I am confusing law with government, but only because they have blurred that line.
