Whatever, Dom. I'm with Breton on this one. See below quote.
'To speak of God, to think of God, is in every respect to show what one is made of. I have always wagered against God and I regard the little that I have won in this world as simply the outcome of this bet. However paltry may have been the stake (my life) I am conscious of ha more…

Whether God has decided it all for us in advance i.e fate, or if our lives are just random occurences that somehow link together in a series of coincidences really makes no difference as the reality we experience remains the same either way. Sometimes I think there is a god, sometimes I don't and sometimes I tell it to fuck off just to see if anyth more…

I'm agnostic. Or indecisive. Which ever term you prefer. I keep hoping things happen for a reason because it's preferable to thinking that something shit happens and there's nothing you can do about it. Thinking it happens for a reason takes away the helplessness. I sometimes envy those with a firm belief in God. more…

I am neither ashamed or afraid to state here and now that I most definitely am a racist, unfortunately for this I have had to make sacrifices because I am a white heterosexual male. You see racism has become the new witchcraft, the fact that the witches are always white is an accurate reflection of the mindset of those who call themselves anti fasc more…

Ideally, yes. But in some societies, the choice is polarised - to pro-life lobbyists of the religious persuasion, both contraception and abortion are plain wrong, whereas pro-choice adherents will tend to favour both contraception and abortion (up to a point).
When a complex issue is turned into a black and white one, it's dismayingly more…

I agree - many of the methods we use to control society are not the 'best' methods, simply the most practical and easy.

That's what contraception is for. more…

I tend to think the waters are far muddier than we'd like. Ideal solutions are generally far harder to achieve than expedient ones, and almost certainly take too long and therefore present too much political risk for governments to stomach.
Another analogy is the prison v rehabilitation debate. It would logically be far better to hav more…

Thanks for that, that is interesting. I had heard of the book, I was just wondering if there was reading available on the internet related to that.
In the spirit of my original post, surely then the problem to be overcome is not the existence of unhappy children growing into adults... but the fact that children grow into unhappy adult more…

'Freakonomics' by Stephen Dubner & Steven Levitt was a hugely popular holiday read a few years ago. One's an economist, the other's a journalist. The premise of the book was that surprising lessons about society can be learned from taking a new and imaginative look at socio-economic patterns. It's a reasonably entertaining read.

Thanks for your comment. I didn't forget about the rape scenarios, it's just that it is, as you say a slightly different issue.
Also, I didn't want to get sidetracked down that route since the rape scenario is often brought up as a defence of pro-choice whereas the vast majority of unwanted pregnancies are not a result of rape, so in my mi more…

You forgot the whole abortion/rape scenario. Abortion will never be black and white. People are too complicated.
When a woman has an abortion, it is a deeply personal process. Should that child be conceived through a relationship, she can be treated negatively by those around her for aborting the child regardless of her reasons. So more…

I shall have to look into the Cytology of it and see how I feel about that.
But I think you are wrong to say the Pope decided it. Before advanced medicine we had no way of telling whether someone was pregnant other than 'signs' such as morning sickness, missing you period and eventually a lump. What advanced medicine showed us was more…

The Pope tried to establish that the point of conception is the beginning of life,or in your words, humanity. This is interesting but in terms of cytology, difficult. Do we attempt to preserve every sperm or egg because they are potential humans?Do we make sacrifices to maintain that level of sanctity of life?
As for quantifying life? Surely i more…

It only becomes about choice when it is established that the thing growing inside her is not a human.
If it is a human, then yes, sacrifices must be made to accomodate it. It is the innocent and helpless that need the most help in this world - we extend hospitality to Prisoners of War, Immigrants, Criminals, the Disabled, the Poor at great e more…

Abortion? The central tenet on this has become the woman's right to choose. It is the woman whose life would be radically altered if she was made to have the child and then what? Give it up?Struggle to look after it?Change her whole way of life to accommodate an unwanted child?Surrender it to collective forms of child rearing? more…
